Kamala Harris
Kamala Devi Harris is an American politician from the United States. Born on October 20, 1964, she was the 49th Vice President of the United States. She is the first woman elected vice president, and also holds the title of highest-ranking female officer in the history of America. As a member of the Democratic Party, she was the attorney general of California from 2011 to 2017 and she was a United States senator representing California from 2017 to 2021. Harris was born in Oakland, California. She graduated from Howard University as well as the University of California Hastings College of the Law. After starting her career as an Alameda County District Attorney Harris was recruited to San Francisco District Attorney's Office. Then she was appointed the City Attorney of San Francisco. In 2003, she became the San Francisco district attorney. Harris was appointed Attorney General of California in 2010, and then re-elected in 2014. Harris was the United States junior senator from California from 2017 until 2021. Harris beat Loretta Sanchez during the 2016 Senate elections, becoming the second African American woman, and the first South Asian American, to be a senator in the United States Senate. In her time as a senator, she pushed for healthcare reform, federal descholaring of cannabis, a pathway for undocumented immigrants to become citizens, the DREAM Act and a ban on assault weapons. She also supported progressive tax reform. She gained a national profile for her pointed questioning of Trump administration officials during Senate hearings, which included Trump's second Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, who was accused of assault on a woman.
